  5. London, whereas the Witan (the king's
  6. council) elected Canute. In the struggle for
  7. the throne, Edmund was defeated by Canute at
  8. Assandun (Ashington), Essex, and they divided
  9. the kingdom between them; when Edmund died
  10. the same year, Canute ruled the whole
  11. kingdom.
